EMPLOYMENT LAW
EQUAL PAY ACT 1972
The Equal Pay Act 1972 is a key piece of legislation that prohibits discrimination in the pay rate of employees, based on the sex of the employee. The Act gives the Employment Court the power to state principles for putting equal pay into place.
With having recent amendments to this legislation come into force on 6 November 2020 (allowing workers to make a pay equity claim using a process aligned with New Zealand’s existing bargaining framework), it is critical that businesses understand their legal responsibilities and requirements under this act.
