Phillis Goredema

Employment Lawyer LLB BA

Phillis Goredema is a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand, specialising in employment law. She holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, with a minor in Philosophy, from the University of Canterbury.

Phillis advises employers and employees on a broad range of employment and workplace matters. She brings a pragmatic, commercially focused approach to her work and is committed to providing clear, practical advice that helps clients manage risk, meet legal obligations, and achieve effective outcomes aligned with their wider objectives.

Outside work, Phillis is a member of the Canterbury Women’s Legal Association and enjoys hiking, reading, and exploring new activities and experiences in her local area.

Phillis has had many career highlights, including the following recent cases:

2025-NZERA 704 – Successfully representing an employer in a redundancy dispute, with the Employment Relations Authority finding that the redundancy was genuine and did not involve an ulterior motive, while dismissing the employee’s unjustified dismissal claim.

2026-NZERA 27 – Successfully representing an employer in proceedings concerning employment status and unjustified dismissal, with the Employment Relations Authority finding that the worker was employed on a casual basis and determining that the unjustified dismissal claim was resolved in favour of the employer.

2026-NZEmpC 69 – Successfully representing employers in Employment Court proceedings challenging an Employment Relations Authority determination, with the parties reaching a full and final settlement and the Court setting aside the Authority’s determination by consent.
